Description
Hymne à l’Amour is one of the most famous French songs ever written.
The music was composed by Marguerite Monnot and the lyrics were written by Edith Piaf in 1949. The song was inspired by Piaf’s great love, the French boxer Marcel Cerdan.
Their relationship was passionate but short. In October 1949, Cerdan died in a tragic airplane crash while flying to New York to see Piaf. Devastated by the loss, Piaf wrote Hymne à l’Amour as a declaration of love that goes beyond life itself.
The melody is simple, emotional, and deeply expressive. It has become a symbol of love and devotion in French culture.
This cello arrangement presents the song in a lyrical and accessible format that allows students to focus on tone, phrasing, and expressive playing. The piece is ideal for developing musical storytelling and emotional connection with the instrument.
This arrangement is part of the CelloCoach teaching series and is designed for students who want to explore beautiful melodies while strengthening their musical expression.
Arranged for cello by J.R. Humphries.
