Description
This arrangement presents Belle nuit, ô nuit d’amour, also known as The Barcarolle, from the opera Les Contes d’Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach.
The Barcarolle is one of the most recognisable melodies in the entire opera repertoire. Originally written as a duet, the music evokes the gentle motion of a Venetian gondola moving across calm water. In this edition the melody has been adapted for duo cello, allowing students to experience the lyrical beauty of Offenbach’s writing while developing expressive phrasing and tone.
Two versions are included:
• Easy Version – designed for developing players who are working within the lower positions and focusing on tone production.
• Intermediate Version – adds more movement and expressive detail while remaining accessible for students.
This piece works beautifully in lessons, recitals, or lyrical tone study. The flowing character of the melody encourages students to think about breath, phrasing, and musical storytelling.
