Description
Sleepers Wake, also known by its German title Zion hört die Wächter singen, is one of the most famous chorale melodies by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The music comes from Bach’s Cantata BWV 140, Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Sleepers Awake, the Voice is Calling). The melody appears in the fourth movement of the cantata and has become one of Bach’s most recognizable and beloved works.
Originally written as a sacred vocal chorale, the music is known for its calm dignity, flowing melodic line, and deeply expressive character.
This cello arrangement presents the famous melody as a lyrical solo that highlights the natural singing quality of the cello. The piece is ideal for developing tone, phrasing, and musical expression while exploring the elegance of Bach’s melodic writing.
Because the cello closely resembles the human voice in range and character, this music translates beautifully to the instrument and offers students an opportunity to practice expressive Baroque style.
This arrangement is part of the CelloCoach teaching series and is designed to help students connect technical development with musical storytelling.
Arranged for cello by J.R. Humphries.
