Description

Scale Maps for Cello is a 24-page visual workbook built around every two-octave major scale across the fingerboard.

Instead of reading a scale only on the staff, students also see where it lives on the cello. Each map shows the strings, positions, extensions, shifts and landing points used in the scale, helping turn written notation into something physical and practical.

The blank circles can be completed with:

• note names
• finger numbers
• or both in separate passes

Each map also includes questions about the key signature, sharps or flats, half steps, open strings, positions and extensions. The student has to examine the structure of the scale before playing it rather than simply following a line of numbers.

The maps follow the complete major-key sequence used in The CelloCoach Scale Book:

C, G, D, A, E, B, F♯, C♯, F, B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭, G♭ and C♭ major.

The colour system comes from The String Player’s Color Position Method. Each colour acts as a visual landmark for a region of the cello fingerboard, making shifts and position changes easier to recognise.

Reference pages from The CelloCoach Scale Book are included so students can move directly between the written scale and the matching fingerboard map. The staff gives the musical route. The map shows where that route sits on the cello.

This workbook can be used during lessons, as homework or for independent practice. Students can print the pages, write directly on them and repeat the maps later using a different approach.

Scale Maps for Cello is part of the wider CelloCoach Approach:

The CelloCoach Scale Book provides the complete technical progression.

The String Player’s Color Position Method gives students the visual language for understanding positions and shifts.

The CelloCoach Repertoire Companion connects the same scale sequence to performance pieces.

Scale Maps for Cello turns that work into an active written exercise, asking students to read, analyse, map and then play each scale.

Each book works on its own, but together they connect notation, fingerboard geography, technique and music.
