Description

The String Player’s Color Position Method gives string players a clear way to see positions and shifts directly in the score.

Instead of filling the page with written instructions, the method uses coloured brackets to show where the hand belongs, when a shift begins and how long a position lasts. Fingerings tell you what to play. The brackets show you where to move and how to organise the passage across the fingerboard.

The method grew from more than a decade of teaching students who did not have endless hours to memorise every shift in every piece. It was developed to reduce hesitation, reveal repeated positional patterns and make the geography of the fingerboard easier to understand.

Inside the book, you will learn:

• the complete colour map for the fingerboard
• the logic behind each colour and position
• how and where to place brackets
• when to remain in position and when to shift
• how to organise crowded or complex notation
• how to adapt the method when musical choices take priority
• how to apply the system on paper or on a tablet

The examples move from simple passages into advanced repertoire, using music by Bach, Beethoven, Saint-Saëns, Romberg, Satie, Offenbach and Francœur. You will see the same passages before and after the brackets are added, making it easy to understand what the method changes and why it works.

Although the method was developed through cello teaching, it can be used across the string family: violin, viola, cello and double bass.

The Color Position Method is designed to support independence, not dependence. The colours help you recognise positions, patterns and movement more quickly. Over time, the goal is for the structure to become familiar enough that you no longer need to rely on the markings.

This book is part of the wider CelloCoach Approach.

The CelloCoach Scale Book builds the technical foundation through scales, positions, shifting and fingerboard work.

The CelloCoach Repertoire Companion connects those scales to performance pieces in the same order of progression.

Scale Maps for Cello turns two-octave scales into written fingerboard exercises that students can complete and apply during lessons or independent practice.

The String Player’s Color Position Method provides the visual language that connects the system.

Each book works on its own, but together they form a practical approach to seeing the fingerboard, building technique and applying it to music.
